In Brazil, Coelce, a subsidiary of the Spanish electricity company Endesa, promotes responsible waste management through a credit system on electricity bills for disadvantaged populations.
To cope with the high rate of defaults and theft of electricity in low-income communities, Coelce developed in 2006 the Ecoelce program, which recovers the value of wasted resources to redistribute it to the population in the form of credits that can be used to pay utility bills.
The waste collected by Coelce customers is weighed and valued at market price, the total value is credited to a personal card and at each billing period, the system subtracts the bonuses earned from the energy bill.
The project works in partnership with local recycling companies that take care of removing waste to factories making new products from recycled materials.
The program has already enabled the recovery of nearly 11,000 tonnes of waste, equivalent to 41,073 GWh of energy, a saving of over 500,000 euros for customers, an increase in the number of subscribers and the development of local recycling industry.
